Blog July 20, 2013 Education I worry about the education of our young and the growth of the aging. They seek “enlightenment” wherever it is readily available with no instruction on how to distinguish the trash from the sublime or insight from propaganda. The latest enemy of the vitality of intelligence is laziness. No one wants to take the time or has the patience to read. I think about all that they are missing in the great classics: Anna Karenina, Catcher in the Rye, The Republic by Socrates (etal), to recognize the great art of Michelangelo, Raphael or Rembrandt. It is important to understand the complex nature of Lorenzo in the Merchant of Venice. Charles Dickens “He is a Scrooge”. Without literature no such comparisons are possible and the fine art of comparison is lost. Cultivation of the mind is vital to a healthy civilization. Without literary guidance people no longer have a reference for the perfect soul and therefore do not long to have one. If your children look to movie stars, celebrities and living icons….you may ask yourself if you have done your job….I know that in this blog I sound like a snob! What inspired me to write it was a recent visit with friends whose conversation could only focus on gossip. There was no thinking going on ….I was so bored. None of them had read a book in many years. I felt deprived of intellectual curiosity. I was a lump in the midst of talking mouths and therefore felt valueless as I had nothing to add.
