Bloomberg is reporting that the NSA exploited the newly-discovered Heartbleed bug to gather intelligence for over two years. I’m not surprised. Indeed, I wouldnt even be surprised if the NSA or another government agency (here or elsewhere) created Heartbleed in the first place. This story has potential to develop into a HUGE scandal for the Obama Administration. It is bad enough that a government agency was exploiting a security flaw to gather intelligence without Congressional knowledge or judicial oversight. It will be much worse if -- in part because of the NSAs failure to warn -- criminals were able to hack and exploit personal information of consumers, investors, and other Internet users in the private sector. So far, there seems to be no such evidence of any such actual harm, but the story is still very young. [Note: I WOULD be surprised if the NSA itself misused any information -- that is a separate issue.]
