Blue Jasmine *** No question about it: Cate Blanchett gives a masterful, Oscar-worthy performance in this misanthropic downer of a movie, and that is perhaps the only reason to watch it. Woody Allens world has always been dysfunctional, but it was always allayed with a modicum of sly, snide humor. There is nothing humorous, nothing funny about this movie. It is ugly, with few redeeming qualities. The best these people can hope for is to get through the day without their resentment turning violent. We can only watch as Jasmine is stripped step by inexorable step of fortune, family, and dignity, without any of the personal resources needed to cope with her situation - not character, not practical wisdom, not skills. And there Allen drops her! The first time I ordered this movie, I couldnt watch it all the way through. I re-ordered it because of the glowing reports of Cate Blanchetts performance. Though I agree with those reports, I was right the first time.
