Bluegreen algae poisoning. Weve had a number of inquiries about this recently and there are rumors of affected water on our patch. As yet we havent seen any cases of this at MCVG. This toxicity can be problematic in lochs and ponds at the end of hot summers, normally in stagnant water. It does NOT normally cause problems in moving water so we have no concerns about the River Nairn being affected as many people have been asking. Not all algae produce the toxins which can make dogs very unwell and we contacted SEPA (scottish environmental protection agency) this week to ask what they can tell us about local water. As of Tuesday this week SEPA were only aware of a single confirmed problem spot in Caithness. They advised us that when a problem is identified the local authority place signs advising people and dogs to stay out of the water. If you see water with obvious algae growing on the surface it would be sensible to keep your dogs and yourselves entirely out of contact with this and consider reporting what youve seen to SEPA who can sample the water. If you have any suspicions your dog may be affected (signs can be vomiting/diarrhoea or neurological signs such as salivating or seizures depending on the toxin involved) we would definitely recommend your dog is examined ASAP. One of our Nurse is writing an article on the topic with some further info for the Forres Gazette this week.
