Board Of Education Update: Q: Are you, Mr. Brady, willing to support the parents who want to fight the State on this (Common Core)? A: I have stated on several occasions that I am concerned about the timeline for rolling out this new curriculum as it did not provide sufficient capacity for our schools to prepare for instructing students on such demanding requirements. This has led to considerable frustration and in some cases students who have become turned off to school. This is all very concerning. However, I am not against the raising of standards which the common core presents as I believe we do our students a disservice by not helping them to develop the skills which will prepare them for the increasingly competitive global marketplace. Too many students flunk out of college or need to take costly remedial classes because they are ill prepared based on their school experience. I am confident that with time, most students can rise to the challenge of this new rigor. Based on these perspectives, I would support parent efforts to lobby the State for additional time for implementation and some possible changes to the common core modules, but I would not be interested in advocating for throwing out the entire curriculum.
