Bob Zahm and Pete Gaecke: You say that we must fix whats wrong with rising tuition rates at our universities. Im with you on that. And Id love to hear more about how to tackle that problem. But must we do that BEFORE we correct the attitude that students are profit centers for lenders? You say that any government program to refinance student loans to lower rates props up the welfare state. Then why isnt the current public education system considered to be part of the welfare state? Its been quite some time since we as a nation agreed to provide free K-12 education to all kids. Not that we actually DO that, but thats what the U.S. says it provides (in theory). So -- why cant we extend that through an undergraduate degree? Yes, youre right. Too expensive. So, if not free, then perhaps we should extend student loans at the going prime rate. Still too expensive? OK. Fine. Then lets make sure student loans never exceed the 30-year mortgage rate at the time theyre initiated. Why is that too expensive? OK. Heres a crazy bleeding-heart liberal idea:L Lets set parameters to ensure that our military spending never exceeds our spending on education. Look, if we can put two 12-year wars on the nations credit card, we can put a few million college educations on a credit card at a rate that the recipients can afford to pay back. If we dont have an educated populace, we dont have a prayer of ever paying back the trillions in war debt.
