¡Bocón! is a studio piece designed, directed and performed by students. Some of the actors are theatre majors and several are from various levels of Spanish classes at William Carey. ¡Bocón! is a very challenging piece because the show is written half Spanish and English. The play was originally written in response to the turmoil in Central America during the late 1980s, but its allegorical examination of freedom of speech and the effects of war are still relevant today. It is a remarkable tale with a beautiful message that will touch a place in everyones heart. Here is a small synopsis: ¡Bocón! is a fable filled with mythology and mysticism, tells the story of twelve-year-old Miguel who flees a repressive military regime in Central America for Los Angeles. A natural storyteller and irrepressible big mouth or bocón, Miguel loses his voice when his parents are taken away and begins a metaphorical journey north to the City of Angels. On his journey Miguel encounters a host of very dangerous magical spirits. The Duende tricks him out of all his money, but he is far less frightful than La Llorona, the bogeywoman of Central America who, according to legend, roams the night and steals children who arent home. In the end, Miguel finds his voice and the courage to cross the border to a new life. Miguels story is relevant to immigrants from all parts of the world... and to anyone who is learning the many meanings of finding ones own voice. Admission is free. We hope to see you soon!
