Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau today announced the creation of an Islamic caliphate in a northeast Nigerian town captured by the militant group earlier this month. The town of Gwoza has effectively been overrun and captured by the extremist group, which has declared plans of establishing an Islamic Emirate in Nigeria and the surrounding region. While the Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria has received the majority of mainstream attention in recent weeks, particularly due to the recent beheading of an American journalist, Boko Haram has continued its spree of violence throughout Nigeria. This spree includes an assault yesterday by militants on a police training camp just outside Gwoza, which has led to 35 officers to be declared missing in action.
