Bonus Random Fact of the Day: Technically speaking, September, - TopicsExpress

Bonus Random Fact of the Day: Technically speaking, September, October, November and December have inaccurate names. The prefix sept- means "seven," oct- means "eight," nov- means "nine," and dec- means "ten." Therefore, the name September implies that September is the 7th month of the year; the name October implies that October is the 8th month of the year, and so on and so forth. But September, as we all know, is the 9th month, not the 7th. October is the 10th, not the 8th. November is the 11th, not the 9th; and December is the 12th, not the 10th. So, what gives? In the ancient Roman calendar, the year began with the month of March -- at that time, September really was the seventh month of the year, October was the eighth, and so on. At some point, January and February were added to the calendar, and that screwed up the whole naming scheme. For whatever reason, the names of those four months (September, October, November, December) were left unaltered.
