Book 8 was the often-draining Duty by Robert M. Gates. First, - TopicsExpress

Book 8 was the often-draining Duty by Robert M. Gates. First, lets get the hype out of the way: he had differences with Obama and his NSC, but he also had differences with Bush 43. He had very warm things to say about both presidents, so the artificial nonsense created by the media is just that: a creation. What was good about the book? There were a lot of really good behind-the-scenes looks at how life-and-death decisions were made; Gatess relationship with Putin and Medvedev were very enlightening, along with the behind-the-scenes goings on during the missile defense tug-of-war and the Georgia invasion by Russian. What was rough going? Good lord, how many ways can you describe how smugly correct you were about the surge in Iraq? Lets face it, that could EASILY have gone either way, and I guess because it was so hugely unpopular among both parties, this gives Gates (who comes off as The Smartest Guy in the Room, Just Ask Him) an opportunity to wiggle his pecker at the critics. Lets see how smug he is if that shit fails. Which it SOOOO easily could have, Anyway - decent read, but at the end of the day, I asked myself: Why write this book? Not sure who gave a crap about Gatess take on stories that have been told a hundred times over already. Glad I didnt pay money for it. Good to see the media was full of crap when it came to the Gates vs. Obama showdowns, and good to see that libraries carry these things so I dont have to waste money on them. 2.5 stars out of 5.
