Book for the Day - Thoroughly enjoying my latest library find, Christopher Snyders The Making of Middle Earth, which explores all the fascinating sources J.R.R. Tolkien used to scribe The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, of course, was a Professor of Languages at Oxford and was familiar with various dialects of old and modern English, Norse, German and even Finnish. Everything from Beowulf and Morte dArthur and the writings of his great friend C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Pre-Raphaelite art to old Icelandic sagas and medieval French poetry provided bits and pieces for his genius (New York: Sterling, 2013). Highly recommended to Tolkien fans!
