Boroughmuir Blaze v. Under 16’s Reign Men 90 – 46 A (slightly!) abbreviated and somewhat belated match report this week. Saturday saw the Under 16 Men travel to the Crags Sports Centre to take on Boroughmuir Blaze. In a match which was ultimately to be characterised by unforced errors and turnover ball by Reign, the Team once again showed glimpses of the progress which continues be made with each passing game. The first quarter started at a frantic pace with Ewan nailing an early 3-point shot, only for Finlayson and Nealon to return the favour as both teams matched up well in the early stages. Perhaps growing in confidence from another good start to a match, Reign began to force the play and unfortunately rush their rotation, allowing Skinner to repeatedly capitalise via several fast breaks in the latter stages of the quarter. Strong rebounding from Nealon also contributed to a run of 16 unanswered points which saw the quarter disappointingly end 31 -13. Both sides, to their credit, rotated their squads as the second quarter commenced. With Blaze giving their Scottish internationalist contingent a temporary rest, Reign were able to dominate for spells, with some good transition running & scoring from Angus and Seif. Jack also got in on the act with a lung busting offensive break before completing a tidy lay-up. Some good work from Gregor on the ground gave Seif the chance to add to the scoring, before he swished a final 3 point shot – allowing Reign to reduce the first half deficit to only 14 points, taking the momentum into the second half. Half-time score 44-30. The third quarter saw the re-introduction of the Blaze starting line-up and a renewed domination, as Reign sought to continue to provide quality game time for the full bench. With 28 of 30 points scored by Blaze coming from their 3 Scotland caps, the quarter ended somewhat dejectedly for Reign – having only managed 6 points in reply. An insurmountable lead of 74 -36, going into the final quarter, permitted both sides to once again rotate their bench to allow for further player development and to showcase some of the Future Starz talent in both sides. Credit, once again, goes to the Blaze Coaching Staff and Team for their sportsmanship and positive coaching ethos. An evenly matched quarter saw Owen and Greig add to their scoring tally for the season, with Ryan and Cameron L also having hard luck going to the basket. Underwood also took his opportunity for Blaze, although McDermott closed out proceedings with 10 points in the quarter including 2 impressive three point shots. Final score 90-46. No game this weekend, although some of the squad will be hosting an U12 & U14 3v3 tournament on Sunday (16th) – on the look-out for future National League players. Full details can be found on the website or via earlier posts. All welcome.
