Boston Herald editorial page editor Rachelle Cohen told Jim Romenesko that neither she nor cartoonist Jerry Holbert saw anything wrong with todays cartoon. Holbert chose watermelon, she said, because hed just seen that toothpaste flavor in his house. CBS Boston is reporting that Herald spokesperson Gwen Gage said in a statement today that the cartoon was satire but added, That said, we sincerely regret if we inadvertently offended anyone and extend our sincere apologies.” Cartoonist Holbert said on Boston Herald Radio this morning, “I had no intention at all of offending anybody. I thought this was a very lighthearted cartoon, just suggesting that the guy got as far as the bathtub and he’s recommending a different toothpaste for the president.” His syndicate, he added, asked him to change the flavor to raspberry. CBS Boston: “They said there’s a racial element to it, and I disagreed to be honest with you, but I did it anyway because that’s what they were asking for,” Holbert said, adding that he regretted not calling The Herald to let them know about the syndicate’s objection. boston.cbslocal/2014/10/01/boston-herald-apologizes-for-obama-watermelon-toothpaste-cartoon/
