Botswana Television Receives P3. 7 Million The government of Japan has assisted Botswana Television (Btv) with approximately P3.7 million. The grant, aimed at improving the national broadcaster’s educational broadcasts and documentary programmes, was a continuation of the long history of cordial relations between the two countries. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Phandu Skelemani and Japanese ambassador, +Mr Hiroyasu Kobayashi signed the grant agreement in Gaborone on July 29. Minister Skelemani expressed delight at the assistance, pointing out that it would contribute to implementation of a project dubbed ‘The improvement of TV programmes of Botswana Television.’ “The objective of the project is to contribute to the variety of television programs being broadcast by Btv, specifically documentary and educational programmes. The Japanese grant will cover the provision of 444 NHK-Japan programs and services towards implementation of the project at Botswana Television,” said Mr Skelemani. Ambassador Kobayashi outlined that the grant assistance project was initiated in 2010 by Btv. Evaluations of the request were made in 2011 and last year the government of Japan approved the grant. “I must mention other cooperation in the field of broadcasting between the two countries. One is the dispatch of an expert from Japan’s NHK over a period of three years from 2009 to help the Ministry of Education to establish Education TV. Also, in February this year Botswana officially adopted ISDB-T, the Japanese system, as Botswana’s digital terrestrial broadcasting system,” said Mr Kobayashi. Some of Japan’s recent grant assistance to Botswana includes the grant assistance for the Photo Voltaic Power Station Project in Phakalane, and the ODA loan for the Kazungula Bridge Project. BOPA
