Boundaries, limitations, disappointments - We all have them. - TopicsExpress

Boundaries, limitations, disappointments - We all have them. Whether we like it or not, the plain truth is that we don’t always get what we want. This can be a hard lesson to learn, but one best taught and internalized when children are still in the care of their parents. Very soon, kids of all ages will be starting school – and they are going to be told “no”… a lot. Parents, if you have not already done so, ease your children into clear boundaries and a good routine in the next few weeks. Transitions can be difficult and this is especially true for individuals who have experienced a summer schedule of time and boundaries that are ish-related. [She goes to bed around nine-ish. The kids can play the video game for an hour-ish. Be home by dark-ish.] It is natural to lighten up a bit on the expectations over the summer, but we are doing our children a disservice if we don’t prepare them for the realities they will soon face at school. Non-Negotiables? • Sleep - Children need 10-12 hours of sleep and adolescents need at least 9. • Limited Electronics - Screens will always beat out homework if it is an even race. • Regular Routine - Meals, Baths, Down Time, etc… • The word “No” - Teachers must provide limitations, so students best be prepared. • Quality Time - Nothing can replace parent-child communication. Get into good habits now. As teachers prepare for the start of school, parents need to prepare their children to do the same. Parents, enjoy these last few weeks of summer, and more importantly, help your children have a smooth transition back into the routine of school. As an educator, I will thank you in advance.
