Box-Jellyfish Alert Issued On Okinawa Okinawa Prefectural Government (OPG) has issued a box-jellyfish alert effective 1 June through 30 September. The OPG is promoting awareness because the peak swimming season on Okinawa and the growth season of box-jellyfish overlap. According to the OPG, 103 cases of injury caused by box-jellyfish were reported in 2013. This is an increase of 24 percent compared to 83 cases in 2012. To prevent injury, the OPG recommends the following: 1) Swimming inside of areas with box jellyfish guard nets. 2) Avoid exposure of skin while swimming. 3) Take vinegar when going swimming. In the event you are stung by box-jellyfish, the OPG recommends the following, 1) Remain as calm and still as possible and call for help. 2) Do not rub the affected area! Carefully remove the tentacles after pouring vinegar and then cool with cold water or ice. 3) Seek medical treatment immediately.
