Boxing Day - celebrated in the Cook Islands and other English commonwealth countries - on Dec. 26 originated in Anglican parishes which offered a box to collect monetary donations from parishoners. On the day after Christmas, the funds were distributed among the poor - and the custom, and name, was initiated. The day after Christmas was also the traditional day on which the aristocracy distributed presents (boxes) to servants and employees — a sort of institutionalized Christmas-bonus party.
