Boxing Junkies recap of Provodnikov vs Alvarado In an awesome and brutal all action fight, Ruslan Provodnikov forced Mike Alvarado to quit on his stool after the end of the 10th round giving him a TKO victory and the WBO Jr Welterweight Title. Alvarado looked good when he boxed but sometimes elected to fight in the pocket which surely contributed to the amount of punches he took all night eventually causing the stoppage. Provodnikov started out with a first round landing vicious power shots causing Alvarado to box and move switching from the conventional to southpaw stance constantly throughout the fight. Through a mixture of boxing and moving and inside fighting for Alvarado I had the fight even through 6 rounds at 57-57. But anyone could see what was happening, The Siberian Rocky was eating everything Alvarado put out and kept coming forward with relentless pressure. Although he did take a lot of shots himself he showed good footwork cutting off the ring as Alvarado danced around looking to move. Provodnikov was using a nice pivot left hook while they were inside fighting that he was landing almost every time he used it. In the 8th round with about 2:00 to go in the round Provodnikov landed some hard clean combinations that hurt Alvarado badly and caused him to kneel to the canvas for the first time in his professional career. It almost seemed as if he had took enough at that point as he barely beat the 10 count rising exactly on referee Tony Weeks count of 10. Provodnikov again landed another bunch of vicious shots beginning with a hard beautiful right hand to the body which he threw and landed frequently the entire fight. Alvarado went down for the second time in his career this time with about 1:20 left to go in the 8th. He fought bravely and somehow managed to survive the round landing a few clean shots of his own before the bell rang. During the 9th round Alvarado boxed and moved as it seemed like Provodnikov ran out of gas, as he was unable to secure a big enough blow to finally knock Alvarado out in the 8th. But he was still coming forward putting heavy pressure on Alvarado, cutting the ring off and throwing shots when he was in position. In the 10th round Provodnikov as he did all fight aggressively stalked Alvarado with relentless pressure. Towards the end of the round Provodnikov caught Alvarado on the ropes and landed another big right hand to the body, which started another assault of huge power combinations. Referee Tony Weeks could have stopped it at this point as Alvarado was barely covering against the ropes. They made their way back to the middle of the ring and Provodnikov again landed a powerful combination sending Alvarado back to the ropes dazed and nearly out on his feet. As the bell rang to end the 10th round a visibly hurt Alvarado barely made his way to his own corner. Trainer Rudy Hernandez told Alvarado he had nothing left, and a few moments later Tony Weeks came by and asked Alvarado do you want to continue. His reply was no. The fight was stopped a 10th round TKO for The Siberian Rocky. Ruslan Provodnikov won the fight with relentless pressure, good footwork cutting the ring off and a warriors spirit throwing some hard power shots mainly the right hand to the body and the overhand right eventually breaking Alvarado down. Boxing Junkies scorecard at the time of stoppage was 96-92 in favor of Provodnikov. Whats next for The Siberian Rocky? Luckily for him the pool of talent at 140 to 147lbs is pretty good at the moment. He could get a rematch with Tim Bradley or he could give Alvarado a rematch. I dont think anyone would complain for either because they were both highly competitive action fights. Depending on what happens with Danny Garcia, Amir Kahn and Floyd Mayweather he could end up getting the left over. There is also the once seemingly indestructible Lucas Matthysse who although is coming off a loss to Danny Garcia is still a top 5 at 140lbs. The options are there so it will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months. I did not mention anything about the winner of Pacman and Rios because obviously Provodnikov is a part of Freddie Roachs stable and is trained by Roach, so unless Rios pulls off the upset its unlikely that fight would take place. Final Punch Stats Provodnikov: Total - 597 / Landed - 206 / Connect % 35 Alvarado: Total - 563 / Landed - 182 / Connect % 32 Power Punches Provodnikov: Landed - 168 Alvarado: Landed - 137 Landed Total on Opponent Alvarado on Provodnikov - Head: 155 / Body: 27 Provodnikov on Alvarado - Head: 167 / Body: 39
