Brad and I had a wonderful afternoon today, driving to Limerick to get blueberries and apples in Cornish. Whenever we are in this area, we both comment to each other how comfortable and familiar this part of Maine is to both of us. When we both had our ancestry done, we discovered that our families, the Blakes and the Watsons came to the United States from England, and settled in New Hampshire and Maine. I often wonder when many of us feel these deep connections and memories of these places that we have never been before, if indeed, we had lived here centuries ago. It was a very cool afternoon, with a crisp breeze blowing from the west. The sky was filled with heavy clouds, yet blue sky peeked out on the horizon, assuring us the sun would return soon. We got the last of our high-bush blueberries at Libbys in Limerick, and got a bag of Macoun apples at Apple Acres in Cornish. One of Brads relatives owned this orchard, and we have always enjoyed their apples, apple pie and fabulous fudge here, too! We saw a grouping of trees we both love, that are the only evergreens that actually turn color and loose their leaves, the larch, also known as the hackmatack or tamarack. They are very delicate, almost Japanese in their delicate branching limbs. There was still color in the foliage today, mostly warm golds and touches of orange. Many of the maples had shed their leaves, yet the oak and beech are holding on tightly in warm shades of gold and yellow. We brought our houseplants that have been enjoying the outdoors inside when we returned home, knowing the temperatures are supposed to drop below freezing tonight. Now we can enjoy their summer growth and presence while the views outside our windows will soon change.
