Bradford Era reporters are working on these stories and more for Thursday’s edition. Notices of violation have been issued to the energy company responsible for a 75-barrel oil spill in Hamilton Township. On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) reported citing Snyder Brothers, a Kittanning-based independent oil and gas producer with violations related to the Oct. 24 spill in which an improperly secured storage tank valve caused nearly 3,000 gallons of crude oil to be inadvertently released. The DEP says that, while much of the spill was contained, roughly seven barrels of oil, made its way into nearby North Fork Chappel Fork and leeched into the ground. Suspended Kane Borough police chief Brian Hillard waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Dom Cercone in Bradford on charges involving the submission of false information on official forms to the state. Hillard, 42, of Greeves Street, Kane, is charged with unsworn falsification to authorities and tampering with public records, both second-degree misdemeanors. Hillard was present at Cercone’s office on Wednesday, but his attorney, John Schwab of Pittsburgh, was not. The charges were brought by the state Attorney General’s Office. Area food pantries, already seeing an increase in need, anticipate even more requests for aid as a result of the recent reduction in food stamps. On Friday, more than 14,000 people in the local region had their monthly food stamp benefits reduced as the federal stimulus expired. According to Feed America, the reduction amounts to approximately $10 per food stamp recipient per month. Cindy Ramage, who oversees six food banks in Potter County, said she and her personnel “absolutely anticipate an increase in need because there are so many families with children who rely on food stamps to keep fed and healthy.” Era reporters will also be out this evening covering the annual Kiwanis Kapers show and a panel discussion on the 50th anniversary of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, featuring longtime faculty and staff members.
