Brahms. Listen closely and youll hear his references in this 1st symphony to Beethovens 9th, which some speculate is Brahms own humorous and somewhat sheepish nod to his predicament and unenviable position of being a symphonist to embark on a career after Beethovens Supernova explosion. Beethoven, the lumbering giant as Brahms would say, was no easy act to follow. And if Beethoven is a vast Viennese garden, Brahms represents the location of the roses in this garden, as his contribution to the Romantic movement is not only integral, but in full bloom.
