Breaking News: Infant Orangutan Was Confiscated in Aceh. How Is His Condition? Malnourished and injured infant orangutan was confiscated by the Human Orangutan Conflict Response Unit of Yayasan Orangutan Sumatera Lestari-Orangutan Information Centre (YOSL-OIC) involving District Forestry and Plantation Office of Gayo Luwes last Tuesday, 5 August 2014. The orangutan was rescued from the Village of Pepelah, Sub-district of Pining in Gayo Luwes, Aceh and brought directly to SOCP quarantine station at Batu Mbelin, Sibolangit, in the District of Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. The rescue team arrived at the quarantine station on Wednesday morning of 6 August. The infant orangutan was then named Pepe. Panut Hadisiswoyo, director of Yayasan Orangutan Sumatera Lestari-Orangutan Information Centre (OIC), said that the confiscation of Pepe was based on community information. After receiving the information, we immediately were on our way to evacuate this infant orangutan. After a thorough examination by the vets of SOCP, Pepe was diagnosed with serious dehydration and malnutrition, also with some injuries on his face and legs. Although some community members insisted to have found the infant orangutan lying on the ground, abandoned by the mother, but the rescue team was unconvinced. Especially by looking at the critical health condition of the orangutan. It was strongly suspected that Pepe fell from his mothers arms, while she was hunted. “The team was convinced that the injuries on the infants body came from attacks by the people trying to catch the mother. It then fell from the tree. The orangutan mother might have been shot down and injured, or probably dead.” Several hours after being treated by the vets, Pepes condition became stabilised. Yenny Saraswati, SOCP quarantine manager, said that Pepe has yet not 100% recovered. But, initial rescue has been done by infusion and feeding with milk. The initial examination identified quite a lo injuries. Swollen left cheek and many beating traumas. Left eye was swollen that it was hardly to open. Pepe also has head injury that it hardly move of lift its head. “Looking at this injury, probably caused by quite strong beating on the head. We still need to observe his health condition.”
