Breast cancer is on the rise in Vietnam. The country is forecast to have 25,000 new cases of breast cancer a year by 2020, health authorities warned. The warning was released at an annual seminar on cancer prevention and control held in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday by the HCMC Cancer Association, the HCMC Oncology Hospital, and the Vietnam Cancer Association. At the event, which drew more than 1,000 delegates from 120 health facilities nationwide, experts warned that in recent years, there has been an increase in breast cancer in Vietnam, especially in Hanoi and HCMC. At an international scientific conference on cancer held in Hanoi-based Bach Mai Hospital in April, patients with breast cancer in Hanoi is 1.5 times higher than in HCMC. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (Globocan), Vietnam had 111,500 new victims of various cancers in 2008, 82,000 of whom died. In a number of provinces and cities, the proportion of cancer patients have increased year after year, the organization said. Cancer rise in people over 40 Besides breast cancer, some other cancers are also on the rise in Vietnam. Accordingly, cancers commonly found in men are those in the lungs, liver, rectum, stomach, and upper jaw, while in women, common cancers are in the breasts, cervix, lungs, rectum, and thyroid gland. The occurrence of these cancers in people over 40 years old has increased rapidly in recent years. Therefore, people in this age range should be examined regularly and undergo cancer screening for early detection so that treatment can be more effective, health experts advised. At the April conference, Mai Trong Khoa, deputy director of Bach Mai Hospital, said Vietnam has about 110,000 new cases of cancer in Vietnam every year and over 73 percent of them die, one of the highest rates in the world. Hospitalization in HCMC rises 10% Dr. Le Hoang Minh, director of the HCMC Oncology Hospital, warned that cancer is among the diseases that cause the highest mortality rates in Vietnam. In recent years, the number of cancer patients at the hospital increased by 10 percent per year. This year, the hospital has received more than 20,000 cases, of which 60-70 percent were transferred from other provinces and cities. A report released at the seminar shows that HCMC alone had 33,126 new cancer patients in 2007-2011. In order to prevent cancer, people should follow a moderate diet, take regular exercise, get proper sleep and rest, limit fat intake, eat more fruits and green vegetables, stay away from cigarettes, and have vaccination against B hepatitis and cervical cancer, Dr Dang Huy Quoc Thinh, deputy director of the hospital, said at a similar held in HCMC in December 2012.
