But that doesnt mean women under that age of 45 are not at risk. This is why family history is so important!!! Know your history and demand screening early if you have breast cancer in your family. > Genetic - BRCA1 and BRCA2: The most common cause of hereditary breast cancer is an inherited mutation in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. In normal cells, these genes help prevent cancer by making proteins that keep the cells from growing abnormally. If you have inherited a mutated copy of either gene from a parent, you have a high risk of developing breast cancer during your lifetime. American Cancer Society If breast cancer is in your family genetic testing can and should be done! > First degree relative - mother, sister, and daughter increases your chances 2-fold. Have two or more increases your chances 3-4 fold. > Dense breast tissue can increase your chances of breast cancer by 1.2 - 2xs. There is more and more being done in the way of preventive care to help women with dense breast detect tumor. MRIs are being used more and more as a preventative measure.
