Breathe in and Breathe Out Sufi Rumi wrote didactically and metaphorically thus: The morning wind spreads its fresh smell. We must get up and take that in, that wind that lets us live . Breathe before its gone. Every breath keeps us alive. Biologically, it is not difficult to understand the importance of in-breath and out-breath. The in-breath brings in oxygen into the body; the out-breath removes the carbon dioxide from the body. Breath ensures the normal function of metabolism. Metabolism is the Unity of all cells or tissues ensuring we are alive. Every Unity of existence is God. Therefore, every breath is life ; life is existence; existence is Unity. Unity is God. Unity is Non-self; Non-self is Emptiness. Emptiness is God . God and Buddha are not distinct in terms of Truth. As far as the system of in-breath and out-breath is concerned , it is an important tool (upaya) in Buddhist mindfulness meditation. Focusing mindfully on the cycle of in-breath and out-breath is Buddhist object of mindfulness meditation. In this context, breath is not only meditatvely significant but also spiritually very important. If this object of meditation is adeptly executed, a meditator will elevate his or her mental cultivation and spiritual growth through mindfulness, awareness, tranqulity or serenity, concentration and finally insight. Therefore, the breath is the forerunner of all the good things to come for a Buddhist mindfulness meditation yogi who is thus blessed. When the meditation yogi realizes that it is the breath that unites his or her five aggregates but not the false human ego of I-making or mine -making or me-making, the meditation yogi will be awake to the Truth that it is Unity of Five Aggregate that creates this world of multiplicity and human happiness. Self-Awakening entails awareness that Unity is the sole agency of existence; ego is not the agency of existence . This insight liberates humankind from dukkha (suffering). It forms perfect human character and sustains lasting human happiness. Be grateful when we still can breath in and breathe out. Breathe in and breathe out, count one; breathe in and breathe out , count two. Continue the mindfulness of your cycle of breath without any egoistic clinging to anything in the world until you reach the count of ten. Then, repeat the whole process of mindfulness of focusing on the breath . Practice meditation until it becomes habitual and until you know its immeasurable value or worth. A huge mountain of jewels is no comparison with the Buddhist wisdom of mystical insight . The best of things in spiritual life will emerge eventually. Ehipassiko !
