Brentwood Methodist is a wonderful church. It has a pastor we all love for her affectionate, caring personality, and her lively, penetrating sermons. The congregation is a community of congenial, friendly people. Brentwood Methodist practices a nearly perfect mixture of traditional and modern Christianity. Its roots go back 150 years in Brentwood. The small chapel-like sanctuary is bathed in the glow of stained glass windows. The choir is dynamic. The organist/pianist creates a reverent mood for prayer, worship, and congregational singing. Brentwood has an active group of dedicated lay ministers: youth leaders, Sunday School teachers, and charity outreach volunteers. Lots of good things are happening at Brentwood Methodist. But one of the best things about Brentwood Methodist is Mel Strongs Sunday morning study group. This class offers a special opportunity for friendship and growth in Christian maturity. The group is a small, but cordial mixture of men and women, old and young. Mel is a wise and sensitive leader. He carefully prepares synopses of each chapter of books we are studying. His class is like a college course in New Testament history and Christian ethics. Actually, it is better than a college course--there are no grades or exams. Current social issues often come up for discussion. Everyone is free to express opinions and insights--even doubts--and share personal life and spiritual experiences. Discussion is stimulating. Attending this class is a positive way to begin the week and prepare for Sunday worship at 10:30. The 9 am Sunday morning book discussion group is continuing our discussions on books of the New Testament. In the month of February we will be discussing Hebrews, The Gospel of John, Ephesians and Revelations. We usually discuss one book a Sunday.
