Brian Giera and I were asked by Marie Pruitt to do the ice bucket challenge-Im all for donating to charity and do it annually- we have family members that have been diagnosed with neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disease- its always good to educate yourself and to donate to research- there are numerous diseases like this that we all should be aware of- Brian and I have instead decided to donate to the research of ALS and also educate the Facebook population on this - Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrigs disease. In ALS basically the nerve cells waste away or die, and cant send messages to muscles. Eventually leading to muscle weakening, twitching, and an inability to move the arms, legs, and body. It slowly progresses - muscles in the chest area can stop working, making it hard or impossible to breathe. ALS affects approximately 5 out of every 100,000 people worldwide. There are no known risk factors, except for having a family member who has a hereditary form of the disease. There is no known cure only treatment - ninds.nih.gov/disorders/amyotrophiclateralsclerosis/detail_ALS.htm
