Though our beloved winners belong to achievers in the category of social media influence, those of us with a good knowledge of the circumstances that brought instant global searchlight on their activism, are clear that theirs are the rare voices (in a nation of 170 million people) crying out for the humanization of the means and ends of political power. They have withstood name calling, thuggery, brazen display of brute force and constant intimidation until the forces that crushed the soul of our country in its most unguarded moment, were forced to admit a problem they had denied and trivialized. These achievers had certainly not set out to become celebrities but examples of what could happen when conscientious people stand out, and refuse to believe the core credo of the new ideology in which money - stolen money, blood money- is all that matters as the ultimate weapon needed to force mankind to abandon its moral high ground and embrace hedonism for those in power as the sole purpose of governance. Had our beloved bowed to fear, the fear that denies right and elevates wrong to a norm, the fear that paralyses social motion and inhibits soul searching among citizens of the world, perhaps a section of our own media would have helped our First Lady to sell her initial lines of denial. Their action has led to the invasion of our landmass by satellites. History is waiting to record how moral wrongs so ubiquitous in this digital age will not bring the harshest judgment (and punishment) on the ideologues and financiers of the abduction of the Chibok Maidens. When either happens, it will not be because we were a caring people. Nor because our institutions were capable of enforcing checks and balances against each other, or all against one that is wreaking so much havoc.. Our luck is that the Almighty God has timely brought forth Hadiza Bala Usman, Maryam Uwais and Oby Ezekwesili as His patience runs out on the insensitivity spotted by satellites all over Nigeria and across our borders. I send my warmest congratulations to our friends, now among the worlds richest in profiles of courage and conscience, as they join our other brothers and sister who have taken their deserved positions on the global entrepreneurial honor list.
