Bringing up Daughters. I have two daughters who were close to me when they were young, but as they grew up they became closer to my wife. During my constant posting in India and abroad I missed out on most of their growing years. So perhaps I couldn’t provide them with the intimacy and closeness that their mother provided. Anyway in today’s world children are smarter and become independent at a very young age, so parts of my responsibilities were deleted by the times. I was sucked up by life and pushed to many shores by my career, but nevertheless it has been a wonderful life. Genetically they have both inherited my sense of humor and some of my madness and like me they too can’t suffer fools. My younger daughter is more circumspect and when I am too silly and let my hair down she reprimands me. I was their friend and inculcated my values, but never a disciplinarian. Though we have a home I have never been able to sit down and chat with them or ask where they are headed. As they got more and more exposed - the world is their own oyster and my space and identity will grow smaller and smaller, till like a speck it will disappear. As I boarded the bus in New York to catch the flight back to Bombay a sense of déjà vu overwhelmed me. I watched my elder daughter Natasha sobbing and returning to Boston consoled by her boyfriend. As I watched her walk away I sensed a tinge of envy, she was going to discover America and start a new life. I remembered how I had left home for the big city lights of Bombay. Oh! How I wish I could relive that time again. –Vinay-
