Britains new radicals 2014: how you can make a positive impact In 2012, the Observer and innovation charity Nesta recognised 50 trailblazers who challenge the mainstream for the public good. Here we launch the search for this years nominations. Shared Lives Plus was recently awarded funding by the Big Lottery, Nesta and the Cabinet Office. (Funding also comes from the social care personal budgets of those requiring care.) CEO Alex Fox says that BNR made a lot of difference. We were looked at in a different way. It was also heartening to be in the company of the others on the list. Now, we have £2m over five years to double the numbers of people [to 20,000] who are approved to become shared life carers. If successful the expansion should save the NHS and local authorities £50m a year by improving wellbeing and peoples independence for longer. Sharing lives goes back to the 14th century, Fox adds. Whats new is paying a person not by the hour but for a whole service, and valuing the contribution, which is unpaid, in sharing interests, friends and family. theguardian/theobserver/2014/may/11/britain-new-radicals-2014-positive-impact-nominations-observer-nesta
