Bro Radio News: The Barry Arts Festival reaches the half-way point today with two well-known Welsh voices and authors speaking about their work. At the Little Blue Deli on High Street, Valleys playwright Frank Vickery talks about his many successful stage comedies and their portrayal of Welsh life. Starts at 5pm, with refreshments. Then, in the evening, Howard Marks, the original Mr Nice, speaks at the Barry Island Sports & Social, speaking about his new book. Marks, an Oxford graduate from Kenfig Hill, was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the USA for drug smuggling in one of America’s toughest prisons. Released on parole in 1995, his autobiography ‘Mr Nice’ was recently turned into a film with Rhys Ifans playing the counter-culture anti-hero. Titled ‘Scholar, Smuggler, Prisoner, Scribe’, Howard’s show will be looking back at four extraordinary and action-packed phases of his life. Tickets for both are available on the door. For youngsters today is the Simon Sparkles Magic Show at Crossways Church at 2pm, where Simon will be impressing the young and the young at heart with his unique fun blend of comedy, magic, games, puppetry, music and balloon animals. Exhibitions continue all week from VOGA (Vale of Glamorgan Artists) at the Travellers’ Café and Gallery at Barry Station, Steve Miller’s abstract paintings at the Old Post Café on Holton Road and works from the Barry Hookers sewing and crochet at Barry Library.
