Brokeback Mountain opera opens in Spain A production based on the tragic love story between two cowboys, played by actors Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger, opens this week in Madrid 27 January 2014 | By Jean Paul Zapata The gay cowboy love film Brokeback Mountain gets its own musical production, debuting this week in Madrid, Spain. The English-language opera is based on the 2005 Oscar-winning film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath ledger as two cowboys who fall in love in 1960s Wyoming. The tragic love story of Jack and Ennis will be portrayed in this opera by Canadian bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch and American tenor Tom Randle, according to a AFP. ‘The whole opera is about a typical kind of impossible situation, a tragic situation,’ said American composer Charles Wuorinen to AFP. ‘In this case, its two people who in some way want to have a relationship which in their time is forbidden by society,’ the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer said. ‘Thats a very traditional operatic problem to deal with.’ Wuorinen said he’s ‘more interested in the fundamental human problem’ between the main characters than making the production a statement about gay rights. ‘I would not want the opera to be thought of as an ideological or propaganda piece. But if it helps, thats fine.’ The production is scheduled to run from 28 January to 11 February in Madrid’s Teatro Real.
