Bruno Walter, what is your opinion of Jazz? BW: Oh, dont provoke me! If you want to provoke me, then I feel I must answer, and I say that jazz is an insult to me. I feel debased by listening to it. I feel that the position of jazz in our music resembles in some way the position of the caricature and the cartoon in the graphic arts. There are very great talents for the cartoon and the caricature, but you would never compare it with great art in painting or in designing and so on. I only can say that jazz is a danger because it appeals to the lower instincts of the listener, and this is characteristic of some tendency in our time which I can only regret.
