Buenas noches! One of the things I love best in telenovelas is what I will call The Paradox of the Gun. (Which sounds more intellectual than calling it The Gun Paradox.) Here it is: In a telenovela, no one is afraid of guns, yet no one is afraid to use a gun. The confidence and scorn that Noveleros show when someone points a gun at them might make more sense if people were afraid to fire the guns, but they are not. Tonights episode of the #Telemundo telenovela #TierraDeReyes is no execption. Abuelo, played by Juaquin Garrido, is confined to a wheelchair and is either pretending to be senile, or he thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt at Panama, and that gigantic staircase is San Juan Hill. In any event, senile or not, he is the best judge of character on the show, and hates his grandson-in-law Leonardocito almost as much as I do. Now as far as I can tell, Leonardo does nothing all day but prance around the house, cheat on his wife, get dressed up with nowhere to go, and make snarky comments about things that are not his business. Except for the bit about cheating on his wife, he is the novela version of an American sorority sister. Today, when Leonardo thought no one was looking, he cut the breaks on Abuelos wheelchair and pushed him outside. Once outside, Leonardo mocked at Abuelo, then yelled at him, again demonstrating his similarity to an American sorority girl. But we were all surprised when out from under the sad blanket covering his useless legs, Abuelo pulled out a pistol, and threatened Leonardo with it. When Leonardo saw the gun, he did what just about every novelero does in such a situation: He continued to mock Abuelo, telling him hed never use it. What is the factual basis for a statement like this? Where does this ill-conceived and just plain wrong confidence come from? And why does Abuelo keep a gun in his wheelchair in his own home, unless he is the Novela Trojan Horse? Surely, none of these Noveleros are watching other novelas or they would realize that the people with guns are not afraid to use them. With that, Abuelo begins shooting repeatedly at Leonardos feet, yelling at him to DANCE!! Which he does, yelling for help. At this moment one of the maids walks onto the porch carrying a cup of coffee for Abuelo, and asks him what is happening. Isnt it kind of clear whats happening? So heres the thing: if you are busy shooting someone, and a passerby comes over and asks whats happening, clearly the shooting part is not that important. Because when you are shooting at someone, its sort of obvious what is happening. So then the maids question is not really Whats happening? as in, why are you shooting him??? She is really asking Abuelo why are you shooting NOW? Which is a very different question! And she didnt ask it in a panicky or bewildered or shocked tone. Actually, the gunfire isnt even why the maid went outside to find Abuelo. She came outside to tell him that Sofia had been thrown by a horse and was unconscious. Arturo brought Sofia out of her coma with little trouble, which for them is like a second date. Their first date was when she hit him with a car. How can you not watch this novela!!?? Gracias!
