Bukit Merah View has become the first estate in Singapore to have a Silver Zone. Launched on Saturday (Oct 18), the area has senior-friendly enhancements to make the roads safer for the elderly. Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Rajah said: “We would so much rather (prefer) that they are mobile on their own, and that they maintain strong mobility, a sense of orientation - all of these things which come with exercise and physical movement. And the implementation of the Silver Zone here will complement these efforts. The estate is one of five announced earlier this year to have a Silver Zone. Those estates have a high concentration of elderly people, and a relatively higher accident rate involving seniors. Road signs mark the entrance of each zone, which also feature three rumble strips to slow motorists down. Large painted markings also remind motorists of the 40 kilometre-per-hour speed limit within the zone.
