TRADERS TO SHUT MARKET IN HONOUR OF EMAB PLAZA VICTIMS The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), the umbrella body of all traders groups in Nigeria, has resolved to honour the victims of the Emab Plaza blast by shutting down all markets and plazas in Abuja. This was contained in a resolution reached at its emergency executive meeting in Abuja over the weekend. Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, the Secretariat President, Mr Ken Ukaoha, said: “It is very worrisome that the bombing of markets and plazas and commercial places is gradually becoming the order in the country to the point that people are now scared of going to markets. “We have directed the FCT Chapter of NANTS to set aside one day in honour of the victims of the Emab Plaza bomb blast. On such a ‘mourning day’ all FCT markets and plazas are to be shut down as a mark of respect for our demised beloved colleagues,” he said. He said the association is worried by the development, and that its members are becoming more concerned over the fact that commercial and economic activities are dwindling at a time when the country has just taken over as the largest economy in Africa, a position that would have jolted Nigerians to work for the stability, economic growth, job creation and industrialization that are key for further development of the nation. Ukaoha also informed of the group’s resolution to direct its FCT chapter to co-ordinate a solidarity programme that would assist in the treatment and rehabilitation of the affected victims, expressing concern over the non-permanence of the presence of security operatives in and around the markets and plazas in the FCT He said the association also resolved to meet with key stakeholders, especially the security agencies, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, in order to map out strategies towards forestalling future occurrences.
