Bulbs for the Greenhouse and Indoors. An unheated greenhouse - TopicsExpress

Bulbs for the Greenhouse and Indoors. An unheated greenhouse which will stand empty for the winter is an ideal place to grow potted bulbs for an early flower show. Pot up the bulbs in shallow planters filled with gritty compost.Keep the vents of the greenhouse fully open apart from when the forecast predicts freezing conditions. When the flowers start to bud bring the pots into the house so you can appreciate the lovely flowers and start to water them to encourage growth. Crocus, Iris and Narcissus are ideal early bulbs for an unheated greenhouse. Planting indoor bulbs is easy and can give you an enviable winter display. Plant bulbs in containers about 10 across. Place canes next to the bulb for support and tie the stems to the canes. Keep them cool but in a light position, kitchen windowsill is ideal, moving them into the living room when flowering begins. Hyacinth and Paperwhite Narcissus are ideal indoor bulbs. To plant an indoor bulb half fill a shallow planter with bulb fibre, lightly firm the compost surface and allow the tip of the bulb to just stick out of the compost surface. Water gently just to moisten the compost, keeping the planters in a cool, dark place and checking on them regularly to see if the compost requires moistening. When the shoots start to show and are about 2 high bring them out and place them in a light position but out of direct sunlight. Water the container gently again just to moisten the compost. Bulb fibre is a growing medium that is especially formulated for bulb growth and can be bought at any garden centre. stortfordgardens.co.uk
