Bulgaria, Austria urge EU to resume South Stream construction The main pipe length in Bulgaria will be 540 km and with a design capacity of 63 billion cubic meters of gas Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer here on Thursday urged the newly-elected European Commission (EC) to resume the construction of South Stream gas pipeline. After bilateral talks, the two presidents said at a joint press conference that Bulgaria and Austria supported South Stream as a form of diversification of routes of gas supply to Europe. Plevneliev said he hoped that a solution on South Stream construction in line with EU rules would be found in an honest dialogue with the new EC. Our expectations are that a reasonable solution will be reached, Fischer said. Regarding the use of the pipeline, if the provisions of EU law are respected, there is no reason not to build the pipeline, he added. In June, the then-Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski suspended works on the South Stream pipeline. This followed the EC opening an infringement procedure against Bulgaria because it said a company has been awarded to design, finance and operate the gas pipeline without the transparent and competitive procedure. The project, that will transport Russian gas to Southern and Central Europe bypassing Ukraine, will be laid across the bottom of the Black Sea from the Russian coast to Bulgaria. The main pipe length in Bulgaria will be 540 km and with a design capacity of 63 billion cubic meters of gas per year. copyright and source: neurope.eu/article/bulgaria-austria-urge-eu-resume-south-stream-construction
