Burgess Family Individual Note: History of Logan County Virginia by Henry Clay Ragland 1896 rewritten by George T. Swain in 1927 page 72. Near the same time the Perrys settled here, several other families from North Carolina made settlements on Buffalo and the waters of Spruce, among whom were William Browning, William, John, Tandy, and Meredith Burgess and Ben White. Note: Because of this statement our Burgess family came from North Carolina. William Browning did come from North Carolina, but the Burgess family migrated from Bedford County, Virginia to Montgomery County, to Giles County to Logan County, Virginia Thomas Burgess our first ancestor to settled in Logan County filed a deed in Cabell County in 1822 on the Waters of the Guyandotte near where Man West Virginia is today. There is a sign near the Guyandotte River today that states Burgess Addition. I believe that Thomas Burgess settled here in 1822. Tandy Burgess settled on Buffalo. His sons were Calvin, Hiram and Cornelius. Burgess, Mullins, Browning Brown and Allied Families by James A Burgess written 1978 published by McClain Printing Company Parsons, West Virginia Tandy Burgess received his given name from Wynna Caudle Key whose ancestor was Nappa Tandy from Ireland. Tandy Burgess was born in Montgomery County, Virginia and lived with his parents Thomas Burgess and Wynna Caudle Key on the East River in Montgomery County (1806 Giles County) until about 1819 when his father Thomas Burgess moved to Cabell County, which later became Logan County in 1824. They lived at the head of Buffalo Creek at a place called Pond and on the tributaries of Buffalo Creek where they raised their family. His grandfather, Meridith Burgess, sold the land for one dollar an acre. Meridith had cut all the timber off , and it was considered as worthless, without the timber. He went to Spruce Fork, and bought land over there. little did they know about the coal underneath, or its worth. Anthony Lawson knew the US govmt was using coal as a ship fuel, and was farsighted enough to invest in the coal lands. The railroad engine was being used in England, and Lawson knew someday the rail lines would be in Logan coal fields.
