Burglars on video! Please share and help us apprehend them. News Release: Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two burglars who broke into a home yesterday after the break-in was captured on a resident’s video surveillance system. On Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at about 6:42 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call from a resident reporting that their townhome had been burglarized by two suspects at about 5:55 p.m. The resident’s video surveillance system captured the break-in, and recorded the suspects until one of them noticed the camera and disabled it. The victim, a woman in her forties, had left for work earlier in the day. No one was at home at the time of the burglary. A review of the surveillance footage shows that the two suspects forced entry into the locked front door of the townhome with a crowbar, which the second suspect then tucks into a pants pocket. Both suspects were wearing gloves. The first suspect walked upstairs to burglarize the home, while the second suspect remained stationed by the front door. That second suspect noticed the video camera, and promptly ripped it out of the wall. At the time it was disabled, the camera had already uploaded the video real-time to a cloud server. Note that the two pet cats, which are visible in the video, were unharmed. Though they left the home shortly after the burglary, they soon returned to be reunited with the resident. Both suspects appear to be Hispanic males in their thirties, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall with medium builds. Both appear to have mustaches and goatees, and are wearing eyeglasses and light-colored hats. Both appear to be wearing similar dark-and-light colored sneakers. The first suspect is wearing a light-colored zip-front jacket and jeans, and the second suspect is wearing a pullover light-colored long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Thus far in 2014, there have been 107 residential burglaries reported in Palo Alto. This is down from 131 in 2013, and 226 in 2012. There were no other residential burglaries reported in town yesterday. Detectives are actively working on this investigation. We encourage people to call 9-1-1 to report suspicious behavior, and allow the police to investigate if that behavior is innocent or criminal. It is always better to call and let the police do their job, rather than rationalize suspicious behavior and not call.
