Burkina Faso after the uprising: civilian or military - TopicsExpress

Burkina Faso after the uprising: civilian or military rule? After 27 years in power, Blaise Compaoré, Thomas Sankaras brother-in-arms, cause of death and successor as president of Burkina Faso, was forced from office following mass protests on the 30th and 31st of October. He was seeking to change the constitution to run for another term in office at next years elections. The army has stepped in but promised to hand over power to a civilian government next year. Opposition parties and civil society are pushing the military to hand their transitional power over to an interim civilian authority before elections towards the end of 2015. The African Union initially expressed profound concern over Compaorés ouster and has since called on the military to transfer power to civilian authorities. The AU has been criticised in some quarters for its response. Are criticisms of the AU fair? How should Burkina Fasos transition unfold? What should become of Compaoré, currently in exile in neighbouring Cote DIvoire? Whats next for Burkina Faso? New African wants to hear your views on the situation.
