THERE IS HOPE FOR US THE YOUTH TO OCCUPY THE SEAT OF POWER AND TRANSFORM THE NATION FOR BETTER. Fellow concerned colleagues, today we present to you a youth aspiring to become the next governor of Abia State and his thought for our development. Read: THE NEW DEAL IN EDUCATION FOR ABIANS Education is the key to sustainable socioeconomic development because no state can progress beyond its progress in educating her citizens. The error of our present educational system is that our educational policy is framed around building institutions that merely award certificate. So we have more people with certificate and less people with empowering knowledge. In order to confront the challenges of changing our decaying and unproductive educational system, we need new political leaders with the political will to explore novel solutions to our decaying educational system and provide answers to such questions as, how can we position our educational system at all levels to prepare our children for the challenges of real life? In what ways can our educational policy empower our school system to provide answers to the numerous socioeconomic problems we are facing today? How can we design school curriculum that challenges our students to harness their God-given talents and abilities for personal growth and national development? How do we implement educational policies that have the capacity to ingrain in our young people the self confidence that will help them to face the world and achieve their dreams? Can we have an educational system that protects our children from the evils of bribery, corruption, favoritism, falsification of result, ethnicity and nepotism that pervades every aspect of our public life? How do we implement educational policies that will ensure that our science and engineering education will empower our graduates to develop and build indigenous technologies that will announce our state to the world? These are questions whose answers my administration will build a sound and functional educational system if I am elected the Governor of Abia State. These are questions from whose answers our educational policies will evolve as a formidable tool to mold the next generation of Abians who will emerge as national leaders and world leaders. I hope to achieve this as the Governor of Abia State. My administration will invest in quality education for every child in Abia State. We have the plan to achieve it; we have the manpower to implement it; we have the resources to execute it. We will invest in equipping libraries and laboratories in all the public and private schools in each of our 17 LGAs in Abia State. We will insist on the best textbooks that are written within the context of our socioeconomic challenges in all our schools. We will infuse compulsory hands-on practical demonstrations in everyday classroom work in our schools. We will ensure conducive learning environment in all approved schools in Abia State. We will provide better pay package and good work incentives for our teachers and lecturers. We will insist on constant training and re-training of teachers and school administrators at all levels of education. We will ensure that our children are not judged by their certificate but by their ability to demonstrate knowledge. This is the new deal I intend to implement in our educational sector if you elect me Governor of Abia State (Please see details of Educational Policy in Udo Ahaiwe Manifesto at udoahaiwe.wordpress). Our high institutions are producing more and more “uneducated graduates” every year. Yet thousands of our young people are innocently applying to universities with neither laboratories nor good libraries only to be indoctrinated into the same club of uneducated graduates. Why will an Accounting graduate find it difficult to balance an account? Why will a science graduate blunder at making an ordinary soap? Why will an Engineering graduate fail to recognize a transistor? Today we find a civil engineer working in a bank as a cashier; a statistician working as a customer care representative and a biochemist working as a printer in a local printing shop. Even some medical doctors have left the hospital because they are not sure they have been properly trained to save life. I believe we can change what is wrong with our educational system. Some may argue that the problem is a national issue but I say we can fix it here in Abia State and show the rest of the country how it is done. We cannot continue in this kind of educational system- a system that has failed to bring out the best in our students; a system that tells our children that they go to school only to acquire certificate; a system that keeps our graduates at home five, six and seven years after graduation without employment; a system that is so expensive and yet so unproductive. Now is the time to change this system. Let’s give a new meaning to education in Abia State. Let’s end the era of “certificate” as the basis of education. Let’s implement clear-cut productive educational policy that will provide answers to our socioeconomic challenges. Let’s give our children the education that will give them opportunity to become world leaders in science, technology, agriculture, politics, commerce, research and entertainment. This is the change Abia State needs in education. This is the change I will offer Abians as the Governor of Abia State. If this is the Abia State you want to see, join me to make it happen. Friends, the time to act is now. This generation cannot fold its hand and pretend we are not affected by these failures. It is our future and our happiness that is at stake here.
