Bush Heritage Australia is on front line of stopping the spread of noxious Siam weed in Queensland’s Wet Tropics. This year we will do 30,000 hectares of fire management in our battle against Siam weed and its threat to 39 regional ecosystems abutting the World Heritage Area. We aim to contain the spread of Lantana and Siam along creeks banks and islands on Yourka Reserve to maintain a buffer between the Wet Tropics area in the east and the Herbert River to the west. Strategic burning will help us to reduce the mass of Lantana which makes looking for Siam extremely difficult, apart from its own impact on the creek lines where it smothers out native vegetation. By applying fire strategically, with a mixture of hotter, dryer and cooler, as well as wetter burns throughout the year, we can assist the regeneration of native shrub coverage and promote a varied understory to improve habitat for woodland birds, says Yourka Reserve manager Paul Hales. And thinning of Lantana around the habitat of endangered Mareeba rock wallabies may help improve their long-term security by preventing intense large-scale fires that threaten their survival.
