Business Analyst Neel Bhende shares his experience of his first three months in Kohinoor - My First Trimester at Kohinoor. Starting a new role in a different organisation and different industry can be a steep learning curve. Kohinoor as an Organization / Legacy is most recognisable in the country. The scope, size and scale of my role were particularly appealing as was the change agenda which they were looking to undertake. The main challenge in this particular role for me was understanding the strengths of the legacy, the progress that the institution has made and balancing this with some new thinking, strategy and process. In my own words, the organization spelt out ‘The Vision of One Man taken forth and multiplied by his Successor’. The opportunity to move into a new industry was particularly appealing to me. Having been in the Banking and Finance Industry for much of my 13 year career, it has been refreshing to take on new categories and industry challenges. The role is newly created within the organisation and has great breadth and scope. The organisation has pan-India reach and recognises that in order to optimise competitive advantage, it needs to have an effective growth and transformational capability. When I was initially approached about the role, I took a couple of trusted people into my confidence. It’s valuable to reach out and see what others think about it. The more you can bounce ideas off others, the more educated your view point will become and the more confidence you can take in your career decisions. Additionally, having frank and open conversations with the MD and Head-HR to understand the direction they’re taking the company allows you to test the situation and gauge your potential for impact, which contributes in your decision to take on the challenge. My 100 day plan was to: • gain a solid understanding of how the business operates at the same time remember what has come before me and the contribution it has made to where the organization is today. • identify the key issues and opportunities that the organization faces. • build relationships with: my manager and the senior leadership team. Visits to all major business verticals were planned and delivered great connections; I have been given the space and time to navigate through the process. Key Learnings: 1. Be realistic about one’s ability to add value early on. 2. Use your fresh eyes to identify areas for improvement. 3. Be confident in the value of your experience in the new environment.
