Business As Usual A Liberal Public Defender recently posted observations he made during his years of practice regarding problems in the black community. It would not be considered politically correct. Poverty prevents many blacks from hiring private attorneys. While they represent a small portion of his community they fill the courthouses. While non-black defendants dress appropriately, remain quiet, and exits quickly, black defendants often don’t dress appropriately, gossip, laugh loudly, and crowd the halls. Black defendants try to trip him up and challenge his knowledge. They do not speak English well or conjugate verbs and have a poor grasp of vocabulary. They are prone to swearing, often become hostile on the stand, and show a lack of empathy. Their testimony and behavior on predominantly white juries generally does not go well. When attempting to explain evidence to black defendants they get angry unable to understand how the facts will appear to the jury. Most black defendants do not have fathers or have very little contact with them and often have mothers that show little concern over their defendant children. They are often raised by grandparents ill equipped to raise children. While blacks make up only 12% of the population they represent 40% of the prison population and have a high recidivism rate. They often have five felony convictions before the age of 30 a record rare among whites and Hispanics, and even more for Orientals. While many studies have documented the breakdown of the black families, Liberals continue to deny it and blame everything on racism and white supremacy. Until people are willing to have a frank and open discussion on the real causes of black crime, the experience of blacks in the judicial system will be Business As Usual.
