But in the days of Samuel, there was a turning point in Jewish history - the establishment of the monarchy. No longer would every national leader be picked by God. The succession would be hereditary, which meant that the heads of state would not necessarily be righteous. Some would be models of spiritual greatness, such as David, Solomon and Hezekiah, but there would also be despicable kings like Jeroboam, Ahab and Manasseh, who disgraced the nation and pushed it down the slippery slope to destruction and exile.
