...But it’s troubling to hear the RCMP say they were “caught by surprise” by the Ottawa rampage, when it was just a few days ago that federal authorities issued a security warning to their B.C. counterparts. “We are aware, and have been aware, of a heightened concern from entities in Ottawa for at least a few days,” Craig James, the clerk of the B.C. legislature, said Wednesday. “We received information that there may be a problem this week.” The federal warning was taken seriously enough that authorities privately briefed politicians in Victoria. B.C. Attorney General Suzanne Anton said she was told a week ago about a “heightened threat assessment” and Finance Minister Mike de Jong said he got the warning on Monday. “In light of what’s happening in Ottawa, that suspicion was well-founded,” de Jong said. So our provincial politicians and legislative security staff were well-briefed by the feds here, but the RCMP in Ottawa got taken by surprise? What is wrong with this picture? The B.C. links didn’t end there, after it was revealed alleged gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau had been charged with robbery and convicted of uttering threats in Vancouver in 2011. Vancouver police are assisting in the federal investigation of the Ottawa shootings. ...
