Buttercup - Update As some of you will remember Buttercup came to us skin and bones. She was a puppy mill throw away who was discarded like trash in Pasco County and caught in a trap by Animal Control. In April 2014 when Buttercup came into rescue she weighed 75lbs, had infected skin, ears, eyes and a purulent discharge. Buttercup was not a “sweet” girl she was miserable and did not want to be touched at first. The first trip to the vet she was kept overnight due to renal failure and infections, not to mention that she was heart worm positive. Upon return home with good food, medications and lots of TLC Buttercup put on enough weight to be spayed. That vet trip was a nightmare. Buttercup had a horrendous Pyometra; her uterus was enlarged and attached to other vital organs. While under anesthesia Buttercup went into a lethal arrhythmia and her heart stopped. This was another touch and go situation from which Buttercup again survived. Once again Buttercup came home, and within a few weeks she was strong enough to begin the heartworm treatment. This month Buttercup completed the heartworm treatment and although partially blind, she played and ran around like a spring chicken. Two weeks ago Buttercup started to limp, at first I thought it was just too much “playing” and old age. Even with supplements the limp progressed so the vet came out and determined it was a soft tissue strain. Rest and medication were advised. Well the limp did not improve, and yesterday Buttercup took a nasty tumble. The foot was non-weight bearing, she would scream with pain if inadvertently she walked on it. Yet her appetite and activity level remained unchanged. The vet came out again and x-rays were obtained and a preliminary diagnosis of a possible fracture or severe arthritis was made until the x-rays could be developed. This morning I got the news which Pam and I dreaded, it was bone cancer! Buttercup has been a joy, she marches to her own drummer and finds great pleasure in every meal, play and soaking up the sun. Last night was a tough one for her but this morning she is the Old Buttercup, a little less anxious to be the first one out the door and gingerly finds her spot in the sun. Buttercup is not ready to cross that Rainbow Bridge yet. She will be on medications to relieve the pain and inflammation but there is a brace that would take some of the stress off of the leg. WE NEED YOUR HELP. The cost of the brace is $700. Please consider donating so that rescue can purchase Buttercup a brace to provide her with support and reduce her pain. We will keep Buttercup pain free as long as possible and when she lets me know that it is time we will allow her to cross the Rainbow Bridge with dignity. Thank you, Jan
