Buturo sues Maj Kazoora over ‘panda gari’ remarks Kampala- Former Ethics and Integrity minister James Nsaba Buturo has taken retired Maj John Kazoora to court for alleged defamation. In a suit he filed on Thursday, the former minister claims that Maj Kazoora authored defamatory statements in his book Betrayed By My Leader. Dr Buturo says the statements injured his reputation. The book was published in August last year. Maj Kazoora, a former fighter in the five-year Luweero Triangle bush war that brought President Museveni to power in 1986, recounts the early days of the National Resistance Army guerrilla war before castigating Museveni for betraying the cause of the revolution, abandoning his former comrades and instead started dining and wining with former enemies of the struggle. In the book, Maj Kazoora talks about Dr Buturo’s alleged role in the infamous panda-gari (board-the-truck), a crackdown operation by security forces during the second Obote government in which civilians were arbitrarily arrested, tortured and sometimes killed over framed-up charges. Dr Buturo wants court to bar Maj Kazoora from further publication of defamatory statements against him. In the book, Maj Kazoora alleges that Dr Buturo, who was the then Kampala District Commissioner (1977 to 1986), led the dreaded operations. At the time, many people died, and others disappeared without trace. Dr Buturo denies any role in the panda-gari operations. Court is yet to summon Maj Kazoora to file his defence against Dr Buturo’s claims before setting a hearing date.
