Buy one LifeStraw and help saving lives around the world. goo.gl/rSNRyY LifeStraw water filters convert contaminated water into clean, safe drinking water. The easy-to-use filters are a vital tool for some of the 780 million people who don’t have ready access to safe drinking water. This leaves them at risk for diarrheal disease, which kills more than 1.5 million people every year. Safe drinking water is especially important for vulnerable groups, such as children under five, pregnant women and people living with HIV. LifeStraw water filters also prevent cryptosporidiosis, a major cause of diarrheal illness in people living with HIV and children under five1. LifeStraw water filters comply with US Environmental Protection (EPA) 1987 Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers. Each product in the LifeStraw portfolio is designed for a specific situation where safe water is needed but not readily available. For each LifeStraw sold, one school child in the developing world receives clean water for an entire school year. A comprehensive program to improve school water quality results in a nearly 50% reduction in diarrheal illness. Safe, clean water in schools results in a 42% reduction in absenteeism. In many developing countries school-age girls are tasked with gathering water; reducing this burden directly increases the amount of time girls are in school learning. How it Works When you purchase any type of LifeStraw filter, we use part of the funds to distribute LifeStraw Community institutional water purifiers to schools in Africa. LifeStraw Community is specifically designed to deliver clean, safe water to school children by removing waterborne pathogens and dirt commonly found in source water. In 2013 and 2014 we are distributing LifeStraw Community purifiers to schools in Kenya, which is one of the top 10 countries in the world with the largest population of people without access to safe, clean water. We chose this area for our first program because only 37% of Kenyan schools have access to safe, clean water within 200 meters of the schools grounds. goo.gl/tkkb3x We have over 40 full time employees based in Western Province of Kenya who are managing programs. In 2013 and 2014 your purchases of LifeStraw filters will be directly impacting schools in Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga and Busia counties in Western Province. The large-scale distributions will begin in October 2014 and we will be capturing the program throughout its progress using mobile monitoring systems which will be uploaded into a public GIS database easily viewed by the public. Impact All too often we hear sad and frightening statistics about the hundreds of millions of people around the world without access to safe, clean water and the resulting health burden. We are taking action to address these inequities and invite you to join us. By purchasing a LifeStraw product you can make your own impact with some powerful statistics of its own: A comprehensive program to improve school water quality results in a nearly 50% reduction in diarrheal illness. Safe, clean water in schools results in a 42% reduction in absenteeism. In many developing countries school-age girls are tasked with gathering water; reducing this burden directly increases the amount of time girls are in school learning. goo.gl/RixNWa References UNICEF and World Health Organization (2012).
